She said the reason for the video is so they will know when it is time to help the people outside the gate. Humanity has lost all moral ground, and their only hope is to create a society away from everyone hoping those things will be regained. The video shows a young woman, Amanda Ritter, who says she is the leader of a group fighting for peace and justice which is nearly impossible. Evelyn is just about to reveal that she is taking over, and disbanding the factions when the video starts to play. Four is pissed, but for some reason wants to make sure, so he takes Caleb (Tris brother turned traitor) and forces him to hack the computers for the information. Before they are able to get it, they are caught and labeled as traitors to the mission. When the attack on Erudite takes place, Tris, Marcus, Cara & Christina (Will's sister and girlfriend) sneak into the Erudite compound to seek out the information. Tris decides that she has to go against Four, and join Marcus, otherwise her parents death will have been for nothing. The Dauntless, and the factionless plan to attack the Erudite compound and destroy everyone who lives there, as well as all the information they have collected. Four refuses to believe Marcus is telling the truth about the missing information.

Tris doesn't trust her, but sees no other option. Fours mother, Evelyn, who was until now thought of as dead, is the leader of the factionless. In order to compete with their numbers, the remaining loyal Dauntless decide their only option is to side with the factionless. The Dauntless are split in two, half helping the Erudite, and half against them. Jeannine and the other Erudite attacked to prevent that information from getting out. Marcus, a leader of Abnegation, and Fours abusive father is convinced that the reason for the attack, is because Abnegation was about to release information that would change everyone's world. When it is clear that the Amity will not involve themselves in the war, they head to Candor where the other Dauntless, and remaining Abnegation are sheltered. They first seek out Amity as a safe haven.

Tris, and Four (Tobias)have stopped the simulation used by Jeannine and the other Erudite, turning the Dauntless into their mindless army to eliminate the Abnegation.
